Ping vs Traceroute: What's the Difference?

Ping tests whether a destination is reachable and measures round-trip time using ICMP echo requests and replies. Traceroute maps each router hop along the path by sending probes with increasing TTL values and recording the ICMP Time Exceeded messages that come back.

traceroute / tracert

Question it answersCan I reach it, and how fast?Which path does traffic take, and where does it stop?
MechanismICMP Echo Request / Echo ReplyIncrementing TTL; ICMP Time Exceeded from each hop
Probe typeICMPWindows tracert uses ICMP; Linux traceroute uses UDP by default
OutputReply/timeout, RTT, TTL, packet lossList of hops with per-hop latency
Best forQuick reachability checkLocating where a path fails or slows down
Command namesping (all platforms)tracert (Windows), traceroute (Linux, macOS, Cisco)
Remember it

Ping asks 'are you there?'; traceroute asks 'how do I get there?'

Exam tip

Expect to choose the right tool for a symptom: reachability points to ping, finding the failing hop points to traceroute. Also know Windows uses tracert and that TTL is the mechanism behind traceroute.
