Start Where You Are: Four Starting Points and the Certification to Earn Next

Campus Wire cover: Start where you are, with a four-step staircase from A+ to Security+

Most certification roadmaps start at the finish line: pick your dream job, then work backward. That's fine if you already know the destination. Most of the people who call us don't. They know where they are today and want to know what to do next. So let's start there.

Below are four common starting points, the one certification I'd point each toward next, and why. Every recommendation is checked against what the vendor itself says about who the exam is for.

Reality check

How much experience the vendors expect

Vendors publish recommended experience for each exam. It isn't a hard requirement for CompTIA, but it tells you how ready the average passing candidate is. Here's the stated job experience, in months:

ISC2 CC
0
Cisco CCNA
0
CompTIA A+
12
CompTIA Network+
9–12
CompTIA Security+
24
CompTIA PenTest+
36–48
CompTIA CySA+
~48
0 → 48 monthsVery different starting lines, depending on the cert.

Two of those surprise people. Cisco lists no prerequisites for CCNA and says it assumes little to no networking knowledge. ISC2's Certified in Cybersecurity is tagged for people with no work experience at all. Both are real options for day one.

Find yourself

Four starting points, one next step each

Starting point 1

"I'm not in IT yet"

Next: CompTIA A+ or ISC2 CC

  • A+ if you want a hands-on support job first. It's built around the IT support role.
  • CC if you're set on security and want a credential with no experience bar.
  • Either way, get a home lab going now. You'll need it for every step after this.
Starting point 2

"I've done a year of help desk"

Next: CompTIA Network+

  • CompTIA pegs Network+ at A+ plus 9 to 12 months in network support, which is right where you are.
  • Networking is the skill that separates people who stay at the help desk from people who leave it.
  • After this, decide: build networks (CCNA) or defend them (Security+).
Starting point 3

"I run the network"

Next: Cisco CCNA, then CCNP Enterprise

  • CCNA is widely treated as the networking benchmark, and Cisco lists no formal prerequisites.
  • CCNP Enterprise is one core exam (ENCOR) plus one concentration you choose, like ENARSI or ENSLD.
  • If your shop is moving toward automation, the ENAUTO concentration is worth a look.

Starting point 4

"I'm already in security"

Next: Security+, then specialize

  • CompTIA recommends Network+ and about two years in a security or systems admin role before Security+.
  • Then pick a lane: CySA+ for SOC and vulnerability work, PenTest+ for offensive testing.
  • CySA+ moved to version 4 (CS0-004) in June 2026, so study the current objectives.
Security+ class dates

Security+ is changing November 17

Security+ V8 (SY0-801) is scheduled to replace V7 (SY0-701). If you're on starting point 4, check which version matches your test date before you buy materials.

How I'd sequence it

Three rules for the long game

One cert at a time

Stacking three exams in a year looks good on paper and often ends in retakes. Finish one, use it on the job, then move.

Neutral first, vendor second

Vendor-neutral certs teach concepts that transfer anywhere. Vendor certs like Cisco's prove you can run the gear your employer bought.

Let real postings break ties

Can't choose between two certs? Pull ten job ads for the role you want next and count which one shows up more.

And if you're heading toward management, the path changes shape entirely. Leadership certs like CISM and CISSP reward years of experience more than exam prep, which is a topic for its own post.

Your next move

Do this today

  1. Pick your starting point honestly, based on the work you do now, not the title you want.
  2. Read the vendor's exam page for the next cert and compare its recommended experience to yours.
  3. Take a practice test to see how far you are from passing.
  4. Put a date on the calendar. A booked exam is the best study motivator there is.
