Soldiers: Find Your Army CA Filing Window Before You Pick a Class Date

Campus Wire cover: Hit your Army CA filing window, with a timeline from 90 days out to 45 business days before class

Soldiers, here's the math that trips people up with Army Credentialing Assistance. A class that starts in February has to be requested before the end of the year, but under the Army's FY27 guidance, a request filed too early can be out of bounds too. You're aiming for a window that's only about three weeks wide. Here's how to find yours and hit it.

The two rules

Why the window is so narrow

The Army's benefits page sets two limits that squeeze from opposite ends:

  • Not too late. Every CA request needs at least 45 business days before the course or exam begins. Weekends and federal holidays don't count, so that's roughly nine to ten calendar weeks.
  • Not too early. The FY27 guidance also says the start date can't be more than 90 days after you submit.

Subtract one from the other and you get a filing window of a little over three weeks. Miss it on the late side and you're looking at a later class. File on the early side and you may have to wait and file again.

The clock doesn't start when you click submit

According to the Army's page, the 45 business days count from when your Education Center or Office submits the request to ACCESS, not from when you enter it. Build in a cushion of at least a week, and more around the holidays.

Worked examples

Count backward from your class date

Here's the window for three sample Monday class starts, counting federal holidays as non-business days. Check your own dates with your Education Center, since local processing can add time.

Notice the March example. Christmas, New Year's Day, MLK Day and Presidents Day all fall inside that count, so the last day lands right in the middle of holiday leave. Plan around that.

In ArmyIgnitED

Filing the request, step by step

  1. Research first. Use Army COOL to find credentials tied to your MOS, and confirm with the credentialing body that you're eligible to test.
  2. Open a goal. In ArmyIgnitED, go to Education Programs, then Credentialing Assistance, and create a new goal, either MOS related or not.
  3. Pick the credential and submit the goal.
  4. Apply for funding and review the user agreement.
  5. Enter the details: vendor, start and end dates, and whether you're requesting training, the exam, materials or a mix. Each course and each exam needs its own request.
  6. Get your approval. Supervisor or commander approval is now required on every TA and CA request, at any rank.
  7. Watch for the decision. The Army says most requests are processed no later than three days before the start date. If you've heard nothing by then, open an ArmyIgnitED help desk ticket.
After the class

Don't stumble at the finish

Take the exam

CA-funded training comes with an expectation that you sit for the credential exam. Skip it and you can be asked to repay the cost.

Results within 30 days

Vendors upload grades within 30 days of the end date. If yours doesn't get your exam results, you upload them to the request yourself.

Two strikes, 12 months out

Two recoupment actions across TA and CA in one fiscal year trigger a 12-month suspension from both programs.

Know your limits

One credential a year and three in ten years. Confirm your fiscal year funding with your Education Center, since the Army's page lists both a $2,000 CA cap and a $4,500 TA/CA limit.

Questions about CA specifically go to the CA Virtual Counseling Cell, which you can reach through Army COOL. Tuition Assistance questions go to your local Education Center.
