The New PMP Exam: How the July 2026 Update Changes What You Should Study

Campus Wire cover: The new PMP, study differently, with business environment rising from 8% to 26% of the exam

If your PMP study materials were printed before this summer, they're built for an exam that no longer exists. PMI switched to a rebuilt PMP on July 9, 2026, and the biggest change isn't a new question type. It's how the exam is weighted.

The big shift

One domain jumped from 8% to 26%

The PMP still has three domains, but PMI rebalanced them sharply in the July 2026 content outline:

8% → 26%About one in four questions now tests the world around the project.

Business environment used to be the domain people skimmed. Now it covers governance, compliance, change control, risk, continuous improvement, organizational change and shifts in the outside environment. If your experience is mostly running schedules and teams, this is where your study hours need to go.

What else is new

New formats, new context

Case and scenario questions

New item types built around a longer project situation instead of a one-line prompt.

Graphic-based questions

Expect to read dashboards and project artifacts, not just text.

AI and sustainability in the mix

PMI says these show up as part of realistic project scenarios, not as standalone topics.

Mostly agile and hybrid

Roughly 40% of the exam reflects predictive approaches. The other 60% is split between agile and hybrid.

Who can sit

Eligibility got more flexible

The new outline sets four experience levels based on your education, all counted over the last ten years: 60 months of project leadership with a high school education, 48 with an associate or technical degree, 36 with a bachelor's, and 24 with a degree from a PMI GAC-accredited program. PMI also says it now gives credit for apprenticeship and training experience.

You still need 35 contact hours of project management education. An active CAPM can stand in for those hours. Reading a book or taking practice exams on your own doesn't count toward them.

Dates to know

How we got here

  • Apr 2026PMI explains the change
PMI publishes details of the updated exam ahead of launch.
  • Jul 8, 2026Last day for the old exam
The previous content outline applies to tests taken before this date.
  • Jul 9, 2026New PMP goes live
Every candidate now tests on the July 2026 outline.
  • Late Q4 2026Training rule tightens
Live-class hours will count only from PMI Authorized Training Partners or accredited academic programs PMI recognizes. PMI hasn't named the exact date. Hours completed before then still count.

Check your study materials

Anything built on the previous outline will underweight business environment by a wide margin. Before you buy a book, course or question bank, confirm it covers the July 2026 outline.

Your plan

Adjusting your prep for the new exam

  1. Download the July 2026 content outline from PMI and use its task list as your checklist.
  2. Shift study time toward business environment. Governance, compliance and organizational change deserve real hours now.
  3. Practice reading artifacts. Pull up real dashboards, risk registers and status reports, and ask what a project leader should do next.
  4. Train for longer scenarios. Work through multi-paragraph case questions under time pressure.
  5. Lock in your training hours before PMI's live-class rule takes effect, or make sure your provider qualifies.
