Four Programs That Will Pay for Your Certification Training
There is money set aside to pay for your certification training, and a great deal of it goes unclaimed every year. Not because people apply and get turned down. Because they never apply at all — or because they pay for a class themselves first and make themselves ineligible in the process.
thinQtank Learning is set up to be paid directly by the military funding programs below. This is what each one covers, who qualifies, what the deadlines actually are, and the single mistake that costs people the most money.
The rule that governs every one of them
These programs pay the school. They do not reimburse you. If you pay for a class out of your own pocket and apply afterwards, that money is gone and no program will give it back.
It is the most common and the most expensive error we see, and it is entirely avoidable. Get the funding approved, then start the class. Never the other way round.

Air Force COOL
Credentialing Opportunities On-Line pays up to $4,500 across your career, with prep courses capped at $2,000 per credential and study materials at $500. You can pursue unlimited credentials tied to your primary career field, plus two outside it, all drawing on that same lifetime ceiling.
You qualify as an enlisted member of the Regular Air Force or Space Force at 5-skill level or higher, with no unfavorable information file, on active duty for the full funding period. Officers are not eligible, nor are Guard and Reserve members in drill status, nor anyone within 120 days of separation.
The sequence runs through AFVEC: Virtual Benefits Training, then an education goal, then supervisor approval within a seven-day window, then funding requests in order — materials, prep course, exam. Submit 30 to 60 days before your start date. Report your results within 30 days of testing, because a missing grade makes you liable for recoupment.

Army Credentialing Assistance
Army CA funds one civilian credential per fiscal year, up to $2,000 — a figure reduced from $4,000 in December 2024. Credentialing Assistance and Tuition Assistance share a combined ceiling of $4,500 a year, and aviation credentials are capped separately at $1,000. Over a career you can claim three credentials per ten years of service; recertifications do not count against that.
Two eligibility points are worth reading twice. Commissioned officers became ineligible on 19 March 2026. And your course and exam end date must fall before your ETS, which quietly rules out a lot of otherwise valid plans.
Applications go in between 90 and 45 days before your start date through ArmyIgnitED, after MilGears and CA 101, with an itemised quote attached. The exam must be completed within 180 days of finishing the training or the Army recoups the cost. Two recoupments in one fiscal year suspends both CA and TA for twelve months.
Using Credentialing Assistance does not touch your GI Bill entitlement.
MyCAA
The My Career Advancement Account scholarship provides up to $4,000 toward licenses, certifications and associate degrees for military spouses. It does not fund bachelor's or master's degrees, and spouses of senior officers and warrant officers are not eligible, nor are service members married to service members.
The step that catches people out is the Education and Training Plan. You build it with a career coach through the SpouseWorks portal, and nothing can be funded until that plan is approved. Allow roughly two months from starting the application to being able to request funding for a course. That approval is the long pole, not the paperwork around it.
VET TEC 2.0
The original VET TEC pilot ended in April 2024. VET TEC 2.0 replaced it, and it is the most generous of the four by some distance: tuition paid directly to approved providers, a monthly housing allowance based on E-5-with-dependents BAH rates, and up to $1,000 a year for books. It draws one month of GI Bill entitlement per month of full-time training but does not count against your 48-month maximum.
To qualify you need an honorable discharge (or to be within 180 days of separation), at least 36 months of active duty, and to be under 62 when the VA approves you. No prior use of a VA education benefit is required.
Here is the part that should shape your timing. VET TEC 2.0 is capped at 4,000 funded participants per fiscal year, first come first served. As of late August 2026 the VA listed roughly 2,400 openings remaining for the year. When the cap fills, it fills — and the fiscal year turns over on 1 October.

What a class actually costs you
Qualified military students pay a flat rate of $1,500 per class rather than catalog pricing. Set against an Air Force COOL ceiling of $4,500 or an Army CA award of $2,000, that changes the arithmetic considerably — a single year's Credentialing Assistance covers a class outright with room to spare.
