Tokenization vs Encryption vs Data Masking: What's the Difference?

Tokenization replaces sensitive data with a random token and keeps the mapping in a secure vault, encryption mathematically transforms data so it can be reversed with a key, and masking hides part or all of the data (such as showing only the last four digits), usually irreversibly.

TokenizationEncryptionData Masking
Reversible?Yes, via the token vaultYes, with the keyUsually no (static masking)
Mathematical relationship to originalNone, token is randomYes, derived by algorithm and keyPartially preserved or substituted
Format preserved?Often yesNot unless format-preserving encryption is usedYes
Common usePayment card data to reduce PCI DSS scopeData at rest and in transitTest environments, displays, call centers
Protects againstBreach of systems holding only tokensInterception or theft without the keyOver-exposure to users who need only partial data
Remember it

Tokens point to a vault, ciphertext needs a key, masks just cover it up.

Exam tip

PCI scope reduction questions usually want tokenization. Non-production test data scenarios usually want masking.
