Region vs Availability Zone: What's the Difference?

A region is a separate geographic area containing multiple isolated data center locations. An availability zone is one of those isolated locations within a region, with independent power, cooling, and networking, connected to the others by low-latency links.

Availability Zone

Full definition
RegionAvailability Zone
ScopeGeographic area (e.g. US East)One or more data centers within a region
IsolationFully independent from other regionsIsolated from other zones' failures
Latency betweenHigher (cross-region)Low, single-digit milliseconds
Protects againstRegional disasters; also meets data residency needsData center-level failures
Design patternMulti-region for disaster recoveryMulti-AZ for high availability
Data transfer costUsually charged between regionsOften charged between zones, lower than cross-region
Remember it

Zones protect you from a building failing; regions protect you from a city failing.

Exam tip

High availability questions point to deploying across multiple AZs; disaster recovery or data sovereignty questions point to multiple regions. Edge locations, used for CDN caching, are a common distractor.
