Input Validation vs Output Encoding: What's the Difference?

Input validation checks that incoming data matches expected type, length, format, and range before the application uses it. Output encoding converts data into a safe form for the specific context where it is displayed or used, such as HTML, JavaScript, or URLs, so it cannot be interpreted as code.

Input ValidationOutput Encoding
When appliedWhen data enters the applicationWhen data leaves for a browser or interpreter
GoalReject or sanitize bad dataNeutralize data in its output context
Best practiceAllow-list validation, server sideContext-aware encoding (HTML, attribute, JS, URL)
Primary vulnerability addressedMany: injection, overflow, logic abuseXSS
ExampleRejecting a ZIP code that is not five digitsConverting < to < before rendering
Remember it

Validate on the way in, encode on the way out.

Exam tip

Client-side validation alone is never sufficient on exams; it must be server side. For XSS, output encoding is the most targeted defense.
