Containers vs Virtual Machines: What's the Difference?

A virtual machine virtualizes hardware and runs a full guest operating system on a hypervisor. A container virtualizes the operating system, packaging an application and its dependencies while sharing the host's kernel, which makes it far lighter and faster to start.

VMs each bring their own house; containers are apartments sharing one foundation.

Exam tip

Exams test that containers share the host kernel, so a Linux container needs a Linux kernel, and that VMs offer stronger isolation. Portability and density questions favor containers.
