Eligibility & prerequisites

Required: None formally; NVIDIA expects 2-3 years of practical AI/ML experience with LLMs.

Recommended: 2-3 years with LLMs: transformer architectures, prompt engineering, distributed parallelism, PEFT, RAG, evaluation and profiling. Python required in practice; C++, containers and NVIDIA platforms help.

Keeping it active

Valid 2 years from issuance. Recertify by retaking the current version of the exam before it expires.

Build my study plan

  1. Weeks 1-2: Architecture and data: attention variants, KV cache, tokenizers, data curation and dedup for LLM training.
  2. Weeks 3-4: Fine-tuning: SFT, LoRA/QLoRA, RLHF/DPO concepts; run a LoRA fine-tune with NeMo or Hugging Face.
  3. Weeks 5-6: Optimization and GPU acceleration: quantization (INT8/FP8/INT4), parallelism strategies, Nsight profiling; NVIDIA's Model Parallelism course.
  4. Week 7: Deployment, evaluation and monitoring: TensorRT-LLM, Triton, NIM, RAG in production, guardrails.
  5. Week 8: Practice questions mapped to the 10 domains; revise the three largest domains.

Exam-day tips

  • Model Optimization plus GPU Acceleration is 31% of the score; quantization formats and parallelism trade-offs are must-knows.
  • Know when to choose prompt engineering vs RAG vs fine-tuning for a given business scenario.
  • Expect throughput and latency trade-off questions (batching, KV cache, speculative decoding).
  • Read every question for the constraint being tested: memory, latency, cost or accuracy.
  • With about 2 minutes per question you have time to reason, but flag and move on from long calculations.

Frequently asked questions

How much does the NCP-GENL exam cost?

$200 per attempt, booked through Certiverse.

How long is NCP-GENL valid?

Two years from issuance. You recertify by retaking the exam.

Is the exam online?

Yes. NVIDIA delivers its certification exams online with remote proctoring through Certiverse.

Do I need NCA-GENL first?

No. There is no formal prerequisite, but NCA-GENL is a useful step if you have less than two years of LLM experience.

Is NCP-GENL worth it?

For engineers who fine-tune, optimise or serve LLMs it is one of the few vendor exams that tests GPU-level optimization, and it is affordable at $200.
