CAPM vs PMP: Which Project Management Certification Fits You

PMP or CAPM? CAPM for people starting out, PMP for people leading projects. thinQtank Learning

Project management is one of the few certification paths that applies in every industry: IT, defense, construction, healthcare, government. PMI's two starting points are the CAPM and the PMP. They aren't two levels of the same exam. They're built for people at different points in their careers, and picking the wrong one wastes months.

CAPM

For people starting out

The Certified Associate in Project Management is PMI's entry-level certification, and it requires no project experience. You need a high school diploma or equivalent and 23 hours of project management education before you sit the exam. It proves you know the language and the frameworks, and it's a strong step toward the PMP later.

The CAPM fits people in roles like these, and anyone who wants to move toward running projects:

Project coordinators

Keeping schedules, tasks and people moving on someone else's project.

Project analysts

Tracking status, risks and numbers, with business analysis making up more than a quarter of the exam.

Team members moving up

People who work on projects and want the vocabulary to start leading them.

Service members in transition

Heading into civilian roles without formal project-leadership time on paper yet.

To keep the CAPM, you earn 15 professional development units (PDUs) in each three-year cycle.

PMP

For people already leading projects

The Project Management Professional is the credential hiring managers ask for by name. It requires real project-leadership experience plus 35 hours of project management training, and it tests judgment, not definitions: People, Process and Business Environment.

The PMP changed on July 9, 2026.

New exam format, new domain weights, and a December 1 change to which training hours count. Read what changed in the new PMP exam.

How to choose

  1. No formal project experience yet? Start with the CAPM. It sets you up for the PMP later.
  2. Already leading projects, or have been for a few years? Go straight to the PMP. The CAPM won't add much to your resume.
  3. Somewhere in between? Ask us. We'll look at your experience and tell you honestly which exam you qualify for and which one will move your career.

Start at the level that fits

Our PMP class is a live online training camp built on the July 2026 exam, and it counts toward your 35 contact hours. We're adding a CAPM class to the schedule too. With thinQflex you can spread payments over up to twelve months, and military funding through AF COOL, Army CA and MyCAA is accepted.
