The PMP Exam Has Changed: What's New in the July 2026 Exam

The PMP exam has changed: July 9, 2026, 180 questions, 240 minutes, Business Environment up from 8% to 26%. thinQtank Learning

PMI replaced the PMP exam on July 9, 2026. Same credential, same three domains, same number of questions. But the balance of the exam moved a long way, the question formats changed, and on December 1 the rules change for the training hours you need to apply. If you're studying for the PMP right now, here's what's different.

Same credential. New exam.

Business Environment more than tripled. The new exam expects you to connect projects to outcomes, value and business impact. If you're studying from material written before July 2026, it underweights a quarter of your exam.

Question content

What's really new

Case and graphic questions

Multi-part scenarios built around one project, plus questions that ask you to read charts and visual project data.

Business outcomes

Connecting projects to value, governance and business impact, not just schedules and scope.

AI in the scenarios

Questions now include AI as part of how real projects get planned, run and governed.

Sustainability and stakeholders

Sustainability and stakeholder engagement show up in project-based scenarios.

The mix of project approaches matters too. According to PMI's July 2026 exam content outline, about 40% of the questions represent predictive project management, and the other 60% are split between agile/adaptive and hybrid approaches.

PMI's own guidance is that the core principles and approaches of the PMP stay the same. What changed is how much weight each one carries and how you're asked about it.

Applying

Eligibility and the December 1 deadline

  • July 9, 2026New PMP exam launched
Eligibility opens up to apprenticeships and training, with a 10-year window for your project experience.
  • December 1, 2026Training-hour rules tighten
Live instructor-led training only counts toward your 35 hours if it's delivered by a PMI Authorized Training Partner or an eligible accredited academic program. Self-paced courses can still come from any provider.
  • After you're approvedOne year to test
You have one year to schedule and sit the exam.

Training you complete before December 1 still counts under the current rules.

If you've been putting off your 35 hours, this is the time to get them done.

Studying now

What to do if you're mid-study

  1. Check the date on your material. Anything written before July 2026 underweights Business Environment.
  2. Practice reading charts and multi-part scenarios. Those formats are new, and they take longer per question.
  3. Finish your 35 hours before December 1 if you're taking live training, so they count under the current rules.
