Google's "10 Free AI Courses": What's Real, What's Free, and What Comes Next
Critical take · AI training
A post is making the rounds on LinkedIn: "Breaking: Google just dropped 10 free AI courses. The same curriculum Google uses internally." The courses are real, and they're worth your time. But the post gets the most important parts wrong, and if you're planning a career move around AI, those parts matter. Here's what's actually true, what's free, and how to turn a few free videos into something an employer will pay for.
What the post says vs. what's true
What the post says"Breaking: Google just dropped" them.
"Zero cost. Full access."
"The same curriculum Google uses internally."
"Enterprise-level training."
What's actually trueGoogle announced these courses on September 13, 2023. They're more than two years old.
The videos are free. The hands-on labs use credits, though Google Skills now gives every account 35 free credits a month.
Google has never said that. These are public, introductory courses; the core intro is about 45 minutes.
They're foundations: good concepts, no proctored exam and no certification.
What is new: in October 2025, Google moved its training into one platform, Google Skills (skills.google), with about 3,000 courses, labs and credentials from Google Cloud, Google DeepMind, Grow with Google and Google for Education. You sign in with a Google account and it's free to join.
The 10 courses, and what you'll actually learn
Each course teaches a handful of ideas that show up on every AI certification exam. We've linked each one to the matching free definitions in thinQterms™, so you can lock in the vocabulary as you watch.
| Course | The idea to walk away with | Learn the terms |
|---|---|---|
| Introduction to Generative AI FREE | Models that create new content instead of only classifying it | Generative AI |
| Introduction to Large Language Models FREE | LLMs predict the next token, and that's where both their power and their mistakes come from | LLM · Next-token prediction |
| Introduction to Responsible AI FREE | Fairness, privacy, safety and accountability as design requirements | Responsible AI |
| Introduction to Image Generation | How diffusion models turn noise into images | Diffusion model |
| Encoder-Decoder Architecture | One network reads the input, another writes the output | Encoder-decoder |
| Attention Mechanism | Letting the model weigh which words matter most | Attention · Self-attention |
| Transformer Models and BERT Model | The architecture behind every modern LLM | Transformer · BERT |
| Create Image Captioning Models | Combining vision and language in one model | Vision transformer |
| Introduction to Generative AI Studio (now Vertex AI Studio) | Google Cloud's console for testing and tuning models | Prompt engineering |
| Prompt design in Vertex AI LAB · CREDITS | Hands-on prompt structure, examples and parameters | Grounding · Hallucination |
Green = free video course. Orange = hands-on lab that uses Google Skills credits. Google's 2023 announcement listed the developer path (the technical courses above) as requiring credits for its labs, so expect some of those to draw on your monthly allowance.

Grounding and retrieval reduce it.Full definition & exam tip → RAG vs fine-tuningCommonly confusedRAG gives a model new facts at question time; fine-tuning changes how the model behaves.See the comparison →Free courses aren't a credential
This is the part the viral post skips. Watching ten videos teaches you the vocabulary; it doesn't prove anything to a hiring manager. A skill badge is nice on a profile, but job postings and the DoD 8140 framework ask for proctored certifications. The good news is that the free courses are excellent prep for several of them:
Google Cloud Generative AI LeaderThe natural next step after these exact courses. No coding. AWS Certified AI PractitionerThe same concepts, applied to AWS services. Microsoft Azure AI FundamentalsThe Microsoft side of the same foundations. NVIDIA Generative AI LLMs (Associate)Goes deeper on transformers and LLMs. CompTIA SecAI+For security pros securing AI systems. Claude Certified AssociateApplied AI with Anthropic's Claude.Every one of these has a free thinQguide™ page with the exam domains, cost, prerequisites and renewal rules, plus a study-plan builder. We cover all 38 AI certifications there.

This one is mostly harmless, since the links go to real courses. But the same template gets used to push fake "free certification" sites. Before you click:
- "Breaking" on old news. Search the course name and a year. If it was announced in 2023, it isn't breaking.
- Unverifiable insider claims. "The same curriculum Google uses internally" sounds official, but nothing backs it up.
- Shortened links only. Hover or long-press first. Google's courses live on skills.google, not on a look-alike domain.
- "Free certification." Real certifications are proctored and almost never free. "Free" usually means a course or a badge.
- The ask at the end. "Save, share, follow me" means the post is built for reach, so double-check it before you pass it on.
